ADOPTION PROGRAM COORDINATOR
PURPOSE AND NATURE OF WORK
To facilitate the long-term adoption or fostering of cats, dogs and pocket pets to individuals, families, or other rescue organizations. In performing these duties, the incumbent is given authority to exercise independent judgment and initiative by established policies, procedures, and guidelines. Work is reviewed on the basis of quality, adherence to policy and procedure, and results obtained. Work is performed under the general direction of the Animal Care Manager and has no supervisory responsibility.
EXAMPLES OF WORK (Note: These examples are intended to illustrate the various types of work performed. All of the duties performed by any one incumbent may not be listed.)
Assists the public with animal adoptions and fostering by explaining adoption procedures, showing available animals to prospective adopters, and matching animals with families and other rescue organizations. Educates the public regarding basic legal requirements for adoption and responsible pet ownership. Enters adoption information into the computer and explains follow-up procedures to families that adopt. May recommend against incompatible adoptions or fostering. Develops foster caregivers and rescue opportunities for sheltered animals. Qualifies rescue groups and foster caregivers and maintains updated databases of contacts and activities. Enforces processes related to foster activities. Attends weekly behavior meetings with Animal Care Manager/Veterinary Technician and Certified Animal Trainer. Advertises animals available for adoption. Keeps all data on animal intakes, sources and dispositions current to prepare an annual report with Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Assigns animals to attend adoption events. Assists with animal care as necessary. Participates in/attends events or fundraising activities.
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS
Considerable knowledge of animals in relation to adoption, fostering, and recusing compatibility.
Thorough knowledge of the animal adoption process.
Thorough knowledge of computer software used to track the intake, medical procedures, and adoption of animals.
Ability to prepare reports and to supervise the maintenance of files and records.
Ability to deal firmly, tactfully, and impartially with individuals contacted during the course of work.
Knowledge of animal breeds, behavior, characteristics and the ability to recognize symptoms of common diseases in animals.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, municipal and other governmental officials, and the general public.
DESIRABLE TRAINING, EXPERIENCE, QUALIFICATIONS
Two years experience working with small animals in an animal shelter, rescue or veterinary environment. Possession of a valid driver’s license.
