We are dedicated to finding loving and forever homes for animals in need. Our adoption process is designed to ensure the best match for both the animals and their new families. We work closely with potential adopters to understand their lifestyles, preferences, and expectations, ensuring that each pet finds a suitable, caring environment. Whether you’re interested in adopting a dog, cat, horse, or small animal, our compassionate team is here to guide you every step of the way.

Adoption Hours:
Tuesday - Saturday: 10 am - 5 pm
Mondays and Sundays: CLOSED
General requirements for adopting:

Must be at least 21 years of age.

Must live within 50 miles of our shelter in Marshall, VA

For equines, a home check is completed before adoption.

For companion animals, we require that your current pets be spayed/neutered and up to date on vaccines.

We will ask permission to speak with your vet to confirm the information you provide.
Animals adopted from MHF cannot be sold, traded, or given away. If at any time or for any reason you are unable to keep or provide for the care of your pet, you may return your pet to MHF for rehoming.
Please note: MHF reserves the right to deny an adoption for any reason at its sole discretion and is not obligated to state any reason for such denial.
Available Pets & Adoption Fees
Cats and Kittens
Single Kitten (under 7 mos): $175
Pair of Kittens: $250
Adult Cat (7 mos-8 yrs): $175
Senior Cat (9+ yrs): $100
Pair of Barn Cats: $50

Adoption fees include age-appropriate vaccines, microchip and spay/neuter surgery. Cats go home with a starter bag of food.
Pocket Pets
Chinchilla, Ferret, Rabbit: $75
Guinea Pig, Hamster, Hedgehog: $25

Pigs

Large Birds
$50 each

Dogs and Puppies
Puppy (under 7 mos): $375
Adult (7 mos - 6 yrs): $350
Senior Dog (7+ yrs): $150

Adoption fees include age-appropriate vaccines, Heartworm test & treatment, microchip and spay/neuter surgery. Dogs go home with a collar, harness, leash and starter bag of food.

Cows
1-5 years: $300
5+ years: $200

Adoption fees include deworming and core vaccines.
Goats
One - four goats: $100 each
Five+ goats: $50 each

Adoption fees include fecal testing, deworming, core vaccines and hoof trim. The fee also includes general testing and dental work (if necessary).
Horses
Fees vary, depending on age and rideability. Adoption fees include dental (if necessary), hoof trim, Coggins test, core vaccines, fecal testing and deworming.
Sheep
One - four sheep: $100 each
Five+ Sheep: $50 each
