Licensed Veterinary Technician
Position Summary
The Licensed Veterinary Technician will play a central role in supporting the daily operations of MHF’s on-site veterinary clinic. This includes assisting with surgical procedures, medical treatments, anesthesia management, and coordination of care for animals both within the shelter and from partnering organizations.
As the clinic begins expanding services to the public in 2026, the LVT will also help support community-facing programs such as vaccine clinics and low-cost spay/neuter services.
Key Responsibilities

Assist with surgical procedures, including patient preparation, anesthesia induction, monitoring, and recovery

Provide medical care across multiple species (companion animals, community cats, livestock/equine, pocket pets, etc.)

Function effectively in a high-volume, high-quality surgery and medical environment

Work independently while maintaining clear communication with clinic staff, shelter teams, and volunteers

Supervise, mentor, and train volunteers and staff with varying experience levels in clinic protocols and animal handling

Support coordination across departments (foster, animal care, adoption, and transport) to ensure efficient medical workflows

Respond to foster inquiries via email, providing triage guidance and implementing medical SOPs

Assist in developing and refining SOPs to support clinic growth and expanded public services
Qualifications & Ideal Candidate

Current LVT license (Virginia or eligible for VA licensure)

Prior shelter/non-profit experience preferred

Strong proficiency in anesthesia (induction, monitoring, recovery) for a variety of soft tissue and dental procedures

Experience with intraoral digital radiography preferred

Comfortable working in high-volume surgical settings

Excellent organizational and time-management skills

Confident working independently and equally effective as a team member

Experience mentoring volunteers or junior staff preferred

Commitment to shelter medicine and compassionate animal care
Schedule, Compensation & Benefits

Full-time, 40 hours/week (generally 4 × 10-hour days)

Required to work two weekend days per month (based on schedule needs)

Compensation: $27–30/hr, depending on experience
